Bio
I work at the intersection of performance, musicology and composition, with a particular interest in 20th and 21st century music.
My doctoral thesis (University of York) explored deconstructive approaches to postwar indeterminate music. I studied with David Osmond Smith, Bill Brooks, Linda Hirst and Annette Meriweather. I have given numerous world premieres, including works by Michael Finnissy and Hans Joachim Hespos, and I am recorded by Métier / Naxos America.
Recent publications focus on the work of John Cage; Sun Ra; Michael Finnissy; Hans Joachim Hespos; music and deconstruction and music and pragmatism.
My research interests centre on deconstruction, indeterminate and improvised music and performance, mobile form composition, graphic notation and sound art, with recent compositions probing aspects of Derridean deconstruction in the creative process.
Current projects include books for Palgrave Macmillan on the intersection between deconstruction and experimental radio music, and CUP on hauntology in 1960s repertoire by Cage and Nono. I am recording new albums for Métier of chamber works by Michael Finnissy and Hans Joachim Hespos.
I founded the ElectroFest Abu Dhabi festival of electronic music, and I was a senior lecturer and Program Head of music at New York University Abu Dhabi.
